Ethics Bowl

Debating the Big Questions

.

What is Ethics Bowl?

Ethics Bowl is a national debate competition held at both the intercollegiate and high school level. In each round of competition, teams are asked complex ethical problems and must respond to questions from both the opposing team and a panel of judges.

Unlike traditional debate, in Ethics Bowl, students are not assigned opposing views; rather, they defend whichever position they think is correct, provide each other with constructive criticism, and win by demonstrating that they have thought rigorously and systematically about the cases and engaged respectfully and supportively with all participants. Topics of debate span all subjects, including politics, medicine, religion, technology, and interpersonal relationships.

Opportunities

Ethics Bowl offers team members numerous opportunities for personal, social, and academic development within YUSE. Team members are offered the ability to travel to different universities to participate in ethics bowl competitions and explore cities and campuses outside of New Haven. Ethics bowl members are gain priority to other YUSE events and opportunities, including small seminar-style dinners with speaker series faculty. Additionally, ethics bowl provides a vibrant social scene, where members get to truly know their teammates.

Application Process

The YUSE's Ethics Bowl team is selected via a competitive application process. Candidates are expected to demonstrate their speech abilities and an interest ethics, although experience in ethics and philosophy are in no way expected.

Most successful applicants for the ethics bowl team have no prior experience with ethics or philosophy. You genuinely do not need to prepare at all to try out!
